Save Lives, Clean Your Hands Day

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared May 5 as "Save Lives, Clean Your Hands Day." Healthcare facilities throughout the world are invited to take part in this global initiative, raising hand hygiene awareness and reducing HAIs. More than 2,380 hospitals from 98 countries and territories all over the world have registered to take part in the program. Of the 2,380, 726 are within the United States.

WHO hopes to have 5,000 healthcare facilities registered by May 5 at which time it will unveil a new hand washing toolkit.

A message from Dr. Cyrus Engineer, Project Lead:

Thank you for supporting SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands. Help us spread the word by telling your colleagues in your and other facilities what is happening on 5 May and inviting their help. We have outlined a few ideas on the website including:

  • Take 5 minutes to talk to a colleague about hand hygiene on the day
  • Forward the WHO 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene to 5 colleagues
  • Plan an infection control forum and invite 5 people to talk for 5 minutes on hand hygiene
  • Invite 5 healthcare facilities near you to register their interest
  • Challenge 5 collegial facilities to improve their hand hygiene compliance rates and measure the success.

The Tennessee Center for Patient Safety encourages each of you to register and participate in this initiative! For more information about "Save Lives, Clean Your Hands Day," click on the following link: http://www.who.int/gpsc/5may/en/index.html
